Ursidiol for everyone?

Is your dog on ursodiol? Did you know that studies have found that upwards of 2/3 of all dogs have gallbladder sludge on ultrasound? One study found it in 53% of healthy dogs.

Is that normal? Probably not. Do they need to be on a drug for it? 🤷🏻‍♂️

I feel pretty good treating the majority of these cases with herbs and acupuncture. Especially because it allows me to address the underlying causes and deal with the rest of the animal’s health at the same time.

It’s likely one of many signs that things are headed in the wrong direction. Chinese Medicine recognizes most liver issues as a sign of excess. My new herbal-character approach focuses on constraint and congestion in these types of disease states.

Instead of merely addressing the gallbladder, we would address a chronic congestive/inflammatory pattern that may be present through multiple organs. And even earlier, metabolic…

Community acupuncture as an animal model

I wanted to take some time to highlight my version of community acupuncture. I realize some people may not be familiar with the general concept. And, I’m not certain that it has been done with animals. I wish to not only provide more accessible care, but also create an environment that promotes learning and healing in community.

With the community acupuncture sessions, two animals will be treated simultaneously while discussing different health concerns that both parties can take something different from. I believe that every appointment should also be educational in nature. These acupuncture visits will have us working on health, socialization, and community.

The sliding scale payments also allow community members to support each other in the goal that everyone can participate. The affordable nature of this model…

Dr. Zach, I think this is awesome and such a great way to look at overall health and wellness. We learn so much from others and I believe this is a great way to reach people who might think they can’t afford holistic vet care. Can’t wait to visit and learn more about your vision! Keep it up!

The Future of Working with Dr. Z

For years, I have been thinking about how I want to practice veterinary medicine—not just how I want to provide veterinary care, but what kind of practice I want to build.

I am moving toward a community-centered model, with the goal of making good care more accessible, creating opportunities for people to learn from and support one another, and building a practice that is sustainable for the animals, their people, the community, and for me.

In recent years, I have also become increasingly convinced that one of the greatest absences in our modern society has been community. Whenever we can, I think we should be practicing ways to come together.

For those of you familiar with Flora Roja in Eureka Springs, I have been inspired by Francesca. I was enamored by her sacred ability to create space and bring her style of healing to more people through community acupuncture. I…
